Hawaii has some of the best golf courses in the world and rank among the Golf Digest's Top 100 Courses You Can Play.
Most of these are rated as 4 1/2 star courses and are affiliated with the famous resorts or resort areas that are the home to several famous hotels and condominium communities.
Course rates are different for resort guests, non-residents and kamaaiana.
As the local saying goes, if you don't know what that means you are not one. It means "child of the land" or resident and you have to prove it.
The cruise ship excursion department will get you rates equivalent to the non-resident or non-guest fees but the charge will include round trip transportation.
Transportation is no small matter, especially at Kona where traffic jams between the resorts that are 30 miles away and the ship are terrible. At Kona passengers must tender (take a small shuttle ship) in to the small dock and get back early enough to catch the tenders back to the ship that leaves at 6 p.m.
Kona has the most famous resorts and greatest courses on the Big Island. Definitely play golf here.....no matter the cost. You aren't going to get the twilight rate!
When the ship stops in Kauai, take the ship's shore excursion golf the first day to Princeville or Poipu Bay. They require van rides a considerable distance. The shore excursion price includes the non-resident green fee, cart and the very important and expensive taxi ride.
On the second day in Kauai play nearby Kauai Lagoons early in the morning because the ship leaves in the afternoon.
In Maui, many passengers rent cars in Kahului to be able to explore the other side of the island where most of the big resorts and courses are located. If not renting a car, on the first day take the ship's golf excursion to Wailea or Makena.
The next morning take the shore excursion to Dunes at Maui Lani and be able to return in time to board the ship which leaves at 6 p.m.
